Digital Manufacturing Commons

GE’s Global Research Center (GRC) needed to create a Digital Manufacturing Commons portal (DMC). This is a free, open-source collaboration platform designed to drive speed, efficiency and world-class manufacturing performance for businesses and organizations of all sizes. The DMC is the operating platform for the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) which connects an online community of businesses, government and colleges who share information, services, data, analytical models, simulations and more to advance digital design and manufacturing within the United States.

The dashboard provides a concise overview of everything on the site related to clients and their interests – from tasks and projects to discussions and services. Users have the ability to search for services and solutions that can benefit projects, browse and access company “storefronts” and market their own offerings to the community. They can also view profiles of companies and members, ask questions, conduct discussions and manage their own personal or company profile. It also offers a project management area that allows them to work with existing services or create and add new ones while collaborating with others internally and cross-company.

Extensive user research and usability testing helped shape the design, features and functionality of this marketplace, community center and digital model builder.
